Dr. John Hamilton is the Co-Founder of Cultural Capital Consulting. He also serves as the Associate Vice President, University Access & Retention at California State University, Long Beach, where he readily uses his skillset to improve opportunities for students of color in both the K-12 and college settings. As an influencer in higher education institutions and corporations, Dr. Hamilton seeks to improve practices, inform decisions, strengthen communities, and ensure success.
A former teacher in the Los Angeles Unified School District in Watts, Dr. John Hamilton knew that “impact” and “scalability” were critical to the success of equity and diversity in urban schools. Transitioning to higher education, Dr. Hamilton used “impact” and “scalability” as the Director of New Student Programs for the Academic Advancement Program at UCLA, Assistant Director and Director of the Educational Opportunity Program, and Coordinator of the Learning Resource Center at Loyola Marymount University. He has used his expertise to teach Cultural Diversity, Multicultural Counseling and Socio-cultural Foundations courses at Pepperdine University, National University, and Occidental College.
Dr. Hamilton has presented at numerous conferences and provided workshops on equity, diversity, hip-hop, pop culture, welfare-to-work programming, foster youth, community policing, and identity-conscious strategies. He is the author of Cinque: Rite of Passage, The Elevator is Broken, and Vainglorious: How Today’s Black Men Graduate from College. Additionally, Dr. Hamilton has a strong desire to assist African American students to excel in and outside of the classroom. He pays particular attention to African American males, in the efforts to dispel the myths and deficit perspective attitudes within and beyond the walls of education.
